PACMUN 2020 Statement
18 September 2019
Thank you for your interest in Paris Area Conference Model United Nations (PACMUN) 2020, scheduled for 27-28 March at the American School of Paris.
In response to current reports of the impacts of climate change, and in an effort to restructure PACMUN, our goal is to host an international middle school conference in the most sustainable way we can. This means we will plan and organize all aspects of our conference to be as eco-conscious as possible.
Part of our restructuring plan is to honor the original Paris Area Conference concept behind PACMUN, where the event served the areas neighboring our city. We also want to respect a manageable-sized conference, given the new leadership of the middle school and upper school MUN.
In doing so, we will downsize the conference to about 10 schools, as opposed to the 18 schools that have participated in the past.
Additionally, because air travel has a major environmental impact, we will reduce the largest part of PACMUN’s carbon footprint by giving preference to schools who prioritize traveling by land to Paris.
Our mission in the 2019-2020 school year is to build a strong foundation for our middle school MUN program and to put the climate crisis at the forefront of our conference, from making this the focus of committee topics, to the logistics and organization of the 2-day event itself. We understand this may serve as an inconvenience and disrupt any previous expectations for your involvement in PACMUN.
We know this is an ambitious challenge, but we also appreciate the moral responsibility we have to tackle this climate crisis. Climate change is a multifaceted issue, and we strive to fulfill our small but important responsibility as the MUN platform here at ASP.
Please continue to follow any updates, which will be posted here on our website. Thank you for your understanding in our efforts to restructure our focus and mission for PACMUN.
With warm regards,

MUN conferences address important issues including regional conflicts, peacekeeping, human rights, women and children, economic and social development, and the environment. In its simplest sense, conferences work to provide student participants with a better understanding of the inner working of the UN as they build skills in diplomacy and compromise.
